The Virginia Chapter Kicks Off Seasonal Volunteer Opportunities!

Summer is here, and the Virginia Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is kicking off a season full of volunteer opportunities! Whether you’re passionate about keeping your local beaches clean, protecting water quality, or getting your hands dirty in sustainable landscaping, there’s something for everyone to dive into.

🌊 Summer Beach Cleanups: Fight Plastic Pollution with Us
Join us for regular beach cleanups throughout the summer and become part of the solution to plastic pollution. Our cleanups are a fun and educational way to connect with your community while protecting the ocean. Learn about the top polluting items we collect and see firsthand the impact that single-use plastics have on our coastline. Our cleanups aren't just about picking up trash - they help us change policy at the local and state level to address single use plastics!

💧 Blue Water Task Force: Test, Inform, Protect
Concerned about water quality at your favorite beach or surf spot? Our chapter participates in Surfrider’s Blue Water Task Force, a volunteer-run water testing program that empowers local communities to monitor bacteria levels in recreational waters. We collect and test samples monthly to provide the public with crucial information about the safety of their waterways—and to advocate for solutions when pollution is detected.

🌱 Ocean Friendly Gardens: Greening Our Community
On the third Wednesday of each month, we gather at the historic DeWitt Cottage in Virginia Beach to host Ocean Friendly Garden workdays. This program brings together local volunteers to create beautiful, sustainable landscapes that reduce urban runoff, filter pollutants, and conserve water—all while beautifying our shared green spaces. No gardening experience required—just bring your enthusiasm!

📅 Get Plugged In: Monthly Chapter Meetings
Curious about all the great work we’re doing? Come to a Virginia Chapter meeting, held the third Monday of each month, to learn more about our campaigns, upcoming events, and how you can make a difference. It’s a great way to meet like-minded ocean lovers and find the program that speaks to you.
