A Seatack Elementary 4th grader discusses his solutions to ocean pollution.
Seatack Elementary, an Achievable Dream Academy, is one of the Virginia Beach schools testing our pilot Youth Reusable Bag Program. Our chapter volunteers explained the issue of marine debris and the kids have spent the last several weeks studying plastic pollution and its effects on our waterways and marine life. On March 22nd, 1st and 4th graders presented their findings to a panel of local experts. They had all written letters to Surfrider Foundation about what they learned and what they thought the best solution was to fix the pollution problem. Several students got up in front of the 200 or so attendees and read their letters. Several fourth graders even created educational videos to be shared with the group. The panel, consisting of of community volunteers and representatives from Lynnhaven River Now, TFC Recycling, Virginia Beach City Public Schools, Master Gardeners and more, participated in a Q & A session after the presentations were made. We are so proud of the students at Seatack Elementary and are looking forward to seeing their completed reusable bag designs.
