To convince the City of Virginia Beach to transport dredge spoil to an appropriate facility for treatment and reuse instead of dumping it in the Borrow Pit where it will threaten water quality, local fish & waterfowl populations, and cause worsening stormwater and flooding issues in nearby neighborhoods
The Virginia Chapter is aiming to work with the City of Virginia Beach to require that dredge spoil be treated and properly disposed of rather than filling the Oceana Borrow Pit, which if filled can impact local water quality and wildlife habitat. This relates to Surfrider's strategic goal that by 2035, every beach in the U.S. is safe to swim, surf and play in the water, as verified by robust and comprehensive testing, and water quality conditions support healthy coastal ecosystems.
It's important that the City of Virginia Beach transports dredge spoil to an appropriate treatment facility instead of threatening local wildlife habitat and water quality, especially for residents that live in Oceana.
We'll be making sure that the City of Virginia Beach makes the choice that is in the best interest of local water quality for all people.
