Surfrider goes to ECSC 2016, Nick Gallegos

For the first time in a while, Virginia Beach Chapter set up at the oldest surf contest on the east coast. From Thursday, August 25th to Sunday, August 28th, volunteers manned a tent on the beach and talked to ECSC visitors about Surfrider Foundation, Chapter activities, keeping beaches clean and Surfrider Youth Clubs. Email addresses were collected from people interested in the chapter, swag was given to those who asked questions or played some of our environmental games and we passed out over 100 pocket ashtrays to adult smokers.

The Vans MC gave our chapter numerous shout-outs throughout the weekend. They also encouraged kids to clean the beach in exchange for prizes donated by other vendors. They also gave us the opportunity to talk about our Reusable Bags 4 Youth Program.

On Saturday night, we all took a break and gathered at the Wildfowl Heritage Museum for a late summer Movie Night.

Chapter volunteers contributed at least 150 hours for this event and we can’t thank everyone enough. Participation in this event helped to spread the word about our Chapter and the great things we are doing. As a result, at least two schools have expressed an interest in starting Youth Clubs, we’ve been invited to participate in more local events and hopefully we will be seeing more volunteers at our cleanups, meetings and other events.
